My hd_holidays fic is posted, here, and I won't be able to log in until tomorrow!!
I also don't like having presents under a Christmas tree addressed to me, sitting there smugly reminding me that there are goodies, lovely goodies, and they're for meeee, but I can't open them!
Oh well; it's something to look forward to, at least!

There's this short gen fic, in which Arthur Weasley is telling his boys the story of when he and Molly met and got married. The boys are roughly 10 (Bill), 8 (Charlie), 5 (Percy), 3 (twins), and 1 (Ron) and Ginny is on the way. Bill is obsessed with mummies, Charlie wants the story to have dragons, Percy tells on everybody and cries when Charlie makes fun of him, one of the twins tries to eat a battery, and Ron is being put to bed.
Does this sound familiar to anybody? I'm trying to find it for my little sister, who is 9 and therefore not really an appropriate audience for the fanfics I normally read ;)
ETA: Got it! Thank you miss_bowtruckle!!

Wow! It snowed on lj yesterday! I arrived, as usual, too late to the party, but was thrilled to have received so many snowflakes! Thank you, ayes_sid, zebrui, tuawahine, kath_ballantyne, envious_ema, maple_mahogany, fourth_rose, silvergreen98, rickey_a, and karaz - you totally made my day :D :D :D
In return... well, no, not in return, because I'm about to share a link that is as horrifying as it is hilarious, as opposed to the snowflakes, which were not horrifying at all. Still, here's one of my favourite Christmas traditions: every year at this time, I take a little stroll through
Going Jesus: The Cavalcade of Bad Nativities
Yes, there is a website in which you may find the Marshmallow Nativity, the Chicken Nativity (B'Gock!), more fiber-optics nativities than you ever wanted to see, and many, many more.
Whoooo is the son of God? Whoooo?
Go see! Enjoy! And Season's Greetings to one and all :) :)

In 1989, a man armed with a semi-automatic rifle shot and murdered fourteen women:
Geneviève Bergeron Hélène Colgan Natalie Croteau Barbara Daigneault Anne-Marie Edward Maud Haviernick Barbara Maria Klueznick Maryse Laganière Maryse Leclair Anne-Marie Lemay Michelle Richard Sonia Pelletier Annie Saint-Arnault Annie Turcotte
He injured ten more women at the university, deliberately separating the male and female students and claiming that he was "fighting feminism." Canadians have characterized the massacre as an anti-feminist attack that is representative of wider gender-based violence.
December 6th is now the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The Women’s Events Network in Ottawa is holding a 20th Anniversary vigil and a call to action to end violence against women on December 6th at 6pm at the Women’s Monument in Minto Park. We have launched a Tell 20 Campaign urging citizens to tell 20 people they know about the anniversary and how violence against women affects their community.
Here's what you can do now...
- Tell 20 people about the 20th Anniversary of December 6.
- Tell 20 people about why violence against women concerns you.
- Ask your doctor, dentist, gym or workplace to put 20 violence against women pamphlets at their reception desks.
- Have a violence against women presentation for 20 people in your community or workplace.
- Volunteer 20 hours of your time at a local women’s organization.
- Donate $20 to a local organization working to end violence.
- Speak to 20 men in your life about the importance of women's rights, healthy relationships and respect.
- Join the Women’s Events Network and help us take action today.
- Write to your local MP about the importance of the Long-gun Registry and its role in preventing violence against women.
- Attend the Dec 6 vigil and the gathering at 347 Richmond Rd with 20 friends.

- OMG it's great to have a fic in beta and have the time and mental energy to go over it carefully. And a &^$#ing working computer! I so wish I could've taken as much care with
hd_holidays. Don't know how much public appeal the hp_canon_fest fic will have, but I feel a lot better about it right now than I did about hd_holidays when I sent it in, despite my betas' hard work. I would've like at least two or three more read-throughs, for voice, descriptions, "the ands", and all that. Tough to do when every edit takes five times as long as it should because your bloody mouse has decided to bugger off on you.
Oh well.
- Re. Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits (posted some days ago): interesting replies. I asked because I had just bought their Live in Central Park album, started playing it for the kids, and realized I was prefacing about half the songs with "Now this is one of their big hits."
FYI, here's what people said were probably the top three:
- 11 said Mrs. Robinson
- 10 said Bridge Over Troubled Water
- 10 said The Sound of Silence
- 4 said Scarborough Fair/Canticle
- 2 said Cecelia
- 2 said The Boxer
- 1 said 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
I will resist the urge to try to figure out the relative popularity of Dr. Demento's ( Fifty Ways to Eat Your Lover ).
Honourable Mentions were given to
- Kathy's Song (3 people)
- America (2)
- Kodachrome (2)
- Scarborough Fair (2)
- The Boxer (2)
- Homeward Bound
- I Am A Rock
- I Only Have Eyes For You
- Keep the Customer Satisfied
- Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard
- Richard Corey
- The Sun is Burning
For what it's worth, here's some ( Billboard Singles positions )
You know what I found really interesting, though?
Nobody mentioned The 59th Street Bridge Song (AKA Feelin' Groovy). Huh.
Speaking of groovy, Paul Simon takes a moment during the Central Park concert to give appreciation where it's due: I just wanna thank the Police Department, and the Fire Department, and the Parks Commissioner, and Ed Koch, and particularly, you know, people that never get recognized for doing good deeds for the city, a group of people that have donated half of their proceeds that they're making tonight: the guys who are selling loose joints are giving the city half of their income tonight.
- Daniel Radcliffe is the absolute cutest little button ever. He's adorable. I want to take him home and feed him soup, and then tuck him into bed.
Oh yeah, and he's gotten become gotten quite hot since he grew up, too.
We're watching David Copperfield, btw. He was around ten when he filmed that one, and he's a little explosion of cute on the screen. I didn't actually want to get the Radcliffe version of the film, to be honest, because I'd seen an amazing version of it in the 80s and really wanted to show that one to my kids. We just finished reading the story in one of those "abridged classics" thingies for kids, and while it was competently done, they obviously had to chop out a lot of wonderful stuff. "Drown-dead" and "poor lone lorn creature" and "I never shall desert Micawber!" and "Annual income twenty pounds" and "'umble" and all of that - gone :(
So I looked for the 80's version and couldn't find it. Borrowed the Radcliffe version instead. The kids are loving it, though it is rather distracting because there's not just Ickle Glassless Harry onscreen; there's also, so far, McGonagall (Aunt Betsey), Madam Hooch (Jane Murdstone), Dolores Umbridge (Mrs. Micawber), and Gandalf (Mr. Creakle). Also Bob Hoskins (Micawber), but my kids have never seen him before. Must fix that. Don't know if we'll meet any other familiars in part 2.
- Yes, I said "gotten." It is perfectly acceptable usage in Canadian and American English. If you ever see it in any of my Harry Potter fics, though, please feel free to
slap me let me know.
In fact, forget the "feel free" thing: please do tell me. Ditto apartments, elevators, and all other things wot make Brits cringe. I don't always have the benefit of a Britpicker. It always feels like a compliment to my writing when a reader cares enough about it to let me know how it could be improved.
Um, unless they flame me. Then it's an extra-special treat, because I adore flames. My mom brought me up to be a lady, so there's a lot of Repressed Sarcastic, Mocking Bitch in me; flames give me a wonderful outlet. I especially adore the ones that say things like, "You keep adding U all over the place, you idiot - learn to spell honor and color, ffs!"
- ...and speaking of beta, I'd best get back to that!

- What do you think are Simon & Garfunkel's three most popular songs?
- Also: how many hours of sitting on your butt in front of the computer trying to get your
hp_canon_fest fic ready for beta do you think it takes before your spine compresses enough to shrink your height from 5'4" to 5'3"?

hd_holidays fic finally in. Only thing that went right today. Computer crapped out on me for good, and the entire day was a mess, and after the kids were in bed I heard news that put things in perspective and reminded me that things like crapped out computers and messy days are really not the end of the world.

Some people, when they notice they have a big flist, see it as an opportunity to try to do some good in the world. I always thought I would be one of those people, if I had a big flist.
Instead, I end up sharing links like the following, found while looking up the SNL "More Cowbell" video:
Jizz in my Pants
...not sure this counts as "doing good." For one thing, I had the bloody tune in my head for hours last night, and passed it on to my partner. Consider yourself forewarned!

From Yahoo News, that bastion of journalistic relevancy:
OTTAWA (AFP) - "Thatcher has died," read the short text message that kicked off a brief diplomatic flurry among members of Canada's parliament and their advisors at a black tie dinner this week, said local media Thursday. Upon learning the "news" via mobile or Blackberry at a soiree honoring Canadian military families Tuesday, some 2,000 shocked Conservatives, said to revere the Iron Lady of British politics, and their advisors reportedly huddled to discuss a reaction.
The prime minister's office called Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street to confirm that Margaret Thatcher had indeed passed away -- baffling British officials, CanWest News Service said.
It turned out the message was sent by Canadian Transport Minister John Baird from his home in Toronto to a person at the gala dinner to say his beloved 16-year-old gray tabby cat, named for Margaret Thatcher, 84, had died.
The recipient then forwarded it to others.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office was not immediately available for comment.
Sorry, cat lovers, but I had to giggle at this one.
Also? John Baird is my MP. No, I didn't vote for him, and I loathe a lot of what he's done and wish to hell he'd stop sending me mail telling me all the great things his government has done to fight crime, especially as I disagree with most of them. I do have to respect the man, though, for being one of (iirc) 13 Conservatives who voted to let gay marriage remain legal when it was put to a free vote, helping to finally lay the issue to rest. I called his office beforehand and was told he was going to vote yes "as a matter of individual rights as protected by the Charter." Go him :)
And I'm sorry about his cat.

hd_holidays fic is off to beta, after some deep intervention from scrtkpr, who I can't call a beta because she's more like a midwife for this particular fic.
hd_career_fair reveals went up. And they're very cool. Many excellent fics by excellent and well-known writers, but! Some of my favourite pieces were written by people I had totally never heard of before. I ::heart:: anonyfests.
hp_canon_fest is coming. Slowly, but more steadily than previously expected.
hpgeorgecentric is still doing signups. Sign up! Sign up! Sign up!
- Apparently Oliver Phelps (George Weasley) was bummed about missing Guy Fawkes Day because he was filming Deathly Hallows. James Phelps (Fred) had a fun time at ae bonfire. Guess we know which scenes are currently being filmed. ::sniff::
- My own children recently learned about Guy Fawkes. Is it wrong to be proud that my little guy recited, "Remember, remember, the fifth of November/The gunpowder treason and pot" to his dad?
- Kinda wanted to show them V for Vendetta. Decided to give them a rough plot summary instead. They're a little too young to watch Padmé/Amidala being tortured by Elrond.
- Apparently they're getting ready to film The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings prequel. They'd started to film a Lord of the Rings sequel, about what happened to the Elves who went to the Grey Havens, but decided not to finish it because they weren't sure the public could handle what Elrond got up to post-Sauron. ( Can't imagine why )
- On a similar note, Warner Brothers has decided not to film JKR's sensitive and poignant exploration of how the former Death Eaters ended up working as ( escorts post-Voldemort )
ETA: harryronbigbang is also still doing sign-ups! Sign up! Sign up! Sign up!!! Thanks, shocolate :)

Writing is hard, yo. ::eyes looming deadlines warily::
Would anybody be up for betaing H/D for hd_holidays or [secret]/[secret] for hp_canon_fest when they're ready for beta? I'm not too worried about the H/D, as scrtkpr has already given me a ton of help on it, but the canonfest is making me nervous. It's not a pairing I'm comfortable with.
Also, general query: can anyone explain to me why it is that so many slashers are straight women who are uncomfortable writing hetsex?

Hm... been a while since anything was posted over here...
- Title: Tell me a story...
Author: co-written by thenotoriousso4 and kaalee Rating: PG-13 Pairing: Dean/Seamus Word Count: ~5800 Author's Notes: Loosely based in the_leaky-verse. Unofficial backstory to Dean and Seamus’ relationship/friendship. Set in the summer after sixth year. Written in a RP format, so beware of roving PoV.
- Gosh, I'd forgotten how much I loved QaF. Yesterday I was reminded of why:
Brian and Justin (though it's mostly Brian & Michael on this clip, and yay! for Michael not sounding as whiny as he usually does) - He left because of you
Brian and Justin - Justin says No
- All the above came from a wicked lj thread on on boykissing... which is unfortunately flocked. I would so link to it if it wasn't!
Oh and sorry, the Brian/Justin clips don't actually feature kissing. Somebody linked to a B/J kissing clip (::snicker:: my inner thirteen-year-old says "you said BJ!"), which linked to another kissing clip, which led to some clips that I didn't know Youtube allowed, which (about an hour later) eventually led to lovely angsty bits. This is why I don't hang around Youtube often ;)
- Title: Eislean cuir stad air
Author: Anonymous Prompt: Prompt 79. The Tragedy of Deirdre Pairing(s): Harry/Draco Summary: It is universally agreed that fate is inevitable, though sometimes it can hang on a precipice. It only takes a breath to tip the balance, but on which side will it fall? Rating: NC 17 Warning(s): AU Word Count: 68,000ish Author's Notes: I've had to mix things around quite a bit to make my vision of the prompt fit into JKR's world. While I've tried to stay close to canon, I have tweaked some things and outright changed others to make the fic work. In the end, I'm happy with it, and I hope you enjoy it too. :D The title translates loosely to 'Sorrow suspended,' and the cut text means 'if this be my lot.' I used Gaelic translations, as inspired by the roots of the fable.
I don't usually like AUs, but this one drew me in :)
- Title: Public Affairs
Author: ??? Prompt: #215 submitted by karala Rating: R Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, Draco/Astoria, Harry/Ginny Summary: Harry never could have foreseen what would happen when he teamed up with Draco Malfoy to improve the public perception of Slytherin House. Warnings: Um, it’s got some rather random cameos, some very vaguely implied femmeslash and it’s cleaner and angstier than I usually write. Other than that… Word Count: ~17,500 Author's Notes: This fic kicked my ass back and forth for months so here's hoping you like it! I’m afraid Snape’s portrait didn’t want to come out and play, but I got your other two additions in. Beta’d by Dollface who is so awesome I can barely express it.
- Title: Partake
Author: dysonrules Pairing: Harry/Draco Rating: NC17 Length: 3,800 Summary: Draco likes Firewhiskey. Warnings: Um, alcohol is bad? Except in this particular case. Disclaimer: JKR owns my soul and everything associated with it.
- One of my kids apparently has the swine flu. No blood test done, but the doc in the Hazmat suit yesterday said that's what it is. Yesterday he was lying around whimpering, and today he's running around upset that he can't run around more. Yay!

...cause it's also from hermionebigbang, a community which, though I thought was great as a concept, did not interest me in the least, which made me sad 'cause I do like Hermione. Just not as a central character.
Though it's a bit like mpreg; I have absolutely no interest in it, except for the dozens of fics I adore that have mpreg in them. Wtf, brain?
Anyway, this one is Green, by miss_bowtruckle Artists: acoustics1220 & glockgal Pairing/Characters: George/Hermione, Fred/Angelina Summary: George is finding that caring for his brother and running a business keep him too busy to look for love, but he finds it anyway. Rating: Teen Word Count: 36,408
OK, this one is... um. Well, it's wonderful. Well-written, often funny, touching, and a realistic portrayal of how George and Hermione could possibly end up together in a EWE/NotSoDeadFred post-DH world, and...
And it's also really stuck with me for the last few days. miss_bowtruckle says she's got a few short stories in this universe, and I'm sort of jittering a bit, waiting for her to put them up. It's struck a personal chord for me, and not just 'cause I like the twins.
See, in April 2001, my husband was in a motorcycle accident. He snapped his right femur, pulped his left wrist, and suffered brain damage. The leg healed after a few months; the wrist after a few surgeries. The brain was never the same.
It's hard, being close to someone who has suffered brain damage. ( OMFG, this turned out a lot longer than I'd planned, considering this is my mostly-fandom/not-so-personal blog )
I loved iamshadow's Indivisible By Two stories, because she touches on a lot of that; how the twin relationship changes, how a person changes after severe disability. Part of what iamshadow does very well (IMHO) is showing how both twins change even though Fred is, mentally, the same guy, just Fred learning to deal with pain and physical disability.
In this story... he's not. There's a lot that's the same, but he himself is not who he was, and that has to change all the people around him. Everyone has had to adjust to a new normal, and miss_bowtruckle shows it in a whole lot of brilliant ways, large and small (eg Fred's no longer "Mr. Weasley" to Verity... ouch). It's not always pretty, it's not an everybody lived happily ever after ending, but it's overall hopeful. Hermione is wonderful, and the relationship between her and George, taking place while George is dealing with his new role, is lovely.
Excerpts:
- "Hermione's fun."
George nodded absently over the top of his book, a mug of coffee on his knee.
"We played four games, and she didn't even care that I won three of them." Fred held up a green gingerbread counter before reaching to set it on a green square. "And I could remember all the colours except this one." He touched it with one finger.
George glanced over. "Green."
- Sunday morning dawned clear and bright, and George was rudely awakened by an enormous something bouncing on the foot of his bed.
"It's Sunday! Mum says we're having roast and potatoes and it's my favourite ever. Can we go now?"
George glanced at the clock, then groaned and pulled the covers over his head. "Fred, it's only half-seven. Mum would kill us both if we went now. I may kill you, if you stay here. Please go find something to do..." He knew it would only be a matter of time before Fred was back, but he'd take another half-hour however he could get it.
- "Ha," Fred said, rolling his eyes. "My brother, alone at the bar, keeping an eye on me. That's cool..." He shook his head. "No way. If you're going, at least take someone along, yeah? So it's not completely pathetic."
So yeah. Now that I've blathered on, go read Green. Enjoy. Send miss_bowtruckle love. Tell her you'll cry if she doesn't post the other stories in this universe soon no pressure re. those other stories in this universe, you'll be happy to read them whenever she does post them especially if she does so right now.

- Manos, the Hands of Fate. Just because. Consistently voted one of the 20 worst films of all time, and deservedly so.
- I sooooo want to sign up for
bestmates_xmas. Won't. Already have two fics due December 1. Sign-ups end tonight. ::sobs::
- Wtf,
hermionebigbang? I like Hermione just fine, but have had zero interest in reading fics with her as a central character.
...except that now I'm going to, because this one was just lovely. I got so utterly sucked in it was ridiculous. Every voice is so incredibly well done, the plot unfolds so carefully, the whole thing just... gah!!
Fic: Hermione: a History by nopejr Artists: redheadsarehot & selene2 Pairing/Characters: Ron/Hermione Summary: After Ron's sudden death, Hermione is left to pick up the pieces. - Babysitting the Cub
Author: kennahijja Character(s): Teddy Lupin-centric Rating: G Length: 1666 words Summary: Little Teddy Lupin meets a strange wizard during an outing in Diagon Alley...
- Utterly unrelated to fic: Home. Gorgeous and gloomy and I haven't finished watching it, but already know I'll have to watch it again with my kids. And have some copious "calm down the kids after freaking them out with doom'n'gloom" material on hand for afterwards. Or in between. Don't want nightmares.

Bless me, lj, for I have (unfortunately) not sinned all that much, recently. It's been... almost three weeks since my last posting. (!) Nothing huge going on, just caught up in RL, good and bad. And there's no rhyme or reason to this post; just random sh*t that's come up semi-recently. I had some fics I wanted to rec, but can't find them now. Boo.
- By now everyone's probably seen this, but I still thought it was cool: Oprah Black-Eyed Peas Flashmob
I live under a rock, because I actually kind of didn't know a whole heck of a lot about the Black-Eyed Peas and had to look them up to remind myself of wtf they were
- So I ended up finding My Humps, and watched it, and wished I hadn't. I'd seen it before. It hasn't improved with time :(
- Being a little slow and wondering exactly which humps, lumps or bumps Fergie refers to, I stumbled across the following Translation.
Excerpt: [Will.i.am] Whatcha gonna do with all that junk all that junk inside your trunk?
[White Interpretation] May I kindly ask what your intentions are with your unusually large rear-end?
- Here's what I used to take away the lumpy ache caused by the Peas: Alanis also can haz Humps!
- I can haz sweet potatoes?
Excerpt: Dog: I am not eating a raw sweet potato. Me: You have sweet potato parts all over your snout. Dog: But you don't actually SEE a raw sweet potato, do you? So maybe that's just - um. A birthmark.
- Utterly Random Topic Leap: Remember the wordle pics that show what you talk about the most on your lj? I am amused and dismayed that my wordle has definitely changed from pure HP/DM:

All right, it's definitely time to get serious on those hd_holidays and hp_canon_fest fics :D :D :D
hp_canon_fest, btw, is a fest for strictly canon couples. Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, Draco/Asteria are in; Arthur/Remus and Dumbledore/Umbridge are out :( It's all about Teh Marriages.
- Speaking of marriages, this is probably way too vague for anybody to be able to help, but hey, why not give it a whirl: somebody on my flist linked to an accidental marriage fic, ST2009, Kirk/McCoy. Ring a bell to anybody? I started to read it, had to pause, and now I can't bloody well find it.
- And speaking of Married With Children, did you know that the most prolific (human) mother ever had sixty-nine children? In 27 pregnancies between 1725 and 1765 she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets. Only two of the children failed to survive their infancy. She also holds the records for giving birth to the most sets of twins and the most sets of quadruplets.
You know what her name was? No? Neither do I! Guiness only lists her as the "first wife of Feodor Vassilyev (Russia)."
So, to recap: the woman whose uterus spent forty years double-, triple-, and quadruple-booked still doesn't get a name. Not only that, but at some point her man got re-married. Dunno whether she died or divorced him, but somehow the man found the time and inclination to get married again after siring more offspring than your average male rabbit.
- The man must've had some mighty scary Sugalumps.
And hey! Somehow I've come right back to Lumps, Bumps and Humps :)

- The Childbirth Song, by Helen Austin
- I very much doubt any of my flist will be able to read, let alone understand the wordplay, in the following poem, but in case anybody does, here it is:
Si pública es la mujer que por puta se reputa, La puta, reconocida, re-pública ha de ser. Y siguiendo el proceder De esta lógica absoluta, Aquel que se reputa Ser de República hijo Ha de ser, a punto fijo, El hijo de una gran puta.
- Missing lj. RL gone insane. Hope to be back by September 9.
- Signed up for
hd_holidays and hp_canon_fest. I may be insane. I'm even partly (a very small partly, mind you) hoping I don't get in to hd_holidays.
